Water Regulations/Bylaws
Domestic Hot Water Storage Systems
Disinfection and Risk Assessment
Above Ground Sanitary Pipework & Rainwater Systems

Plumbers and heating engineers who work on the installation and use of water supply systems need to undertake training in this area in order to do the work competently and correctly.  Successful completion of training and assessment in courses available from BPEC will allow suitably qualified individuals to join competent persons or approved contractor schemes that allow self-certification and notification to Water Suppliers and Building Control Departments of work completed.

The Water Regulations and Water Byelaws
These courses have been developed in collaboration with WRAS, the Water Regulations Advisory Scheme for England and Wales and are targeted at individuals who wish to carry out work with their local water company. Successful candidates are encouraged to join WIAPS – WRAS’s Approved Plumbers Scheme, which will let them carry out work without having to be approved by their local water company. An alternative is to join the Approved Contractors Scheme for those water supply companies that operate their own schemes.  Upon completion of work, the Approved Plumber will issue a certificate for work completion to both the owner/occupier and the water company, making the Approved Plumber liable for any difficulties with this installation.

The training and assessments are currently available at many of the BPEC approved centres throughout the country. To find your nearest centre please use the postcode search by clicking here.

Domestic Hot Water Storage
Domestic Hot Water Storage Systems has for many years been known as Unvented or G3 certification, the new Approved Document to Part G of the Building Regulations now applies to ALL domestic hot water storage systems.

The course is aimed at installerswho wish to install Domestic Hot Water Storage Systems. Successful completion of the assessment will allow the installer to demonstrate their competence in the installation of Domestic Hot Water Storage Systems in order to join a Competent Persons’ Scheme which will allow the self-certification of installations. If the installer does not wish to join such a scheme it will demonstrate competency to the local Building Control department when submitting Building Control Notices prior to commencing work.

Disinfection and Risk Assessment of Domestic Hot Water Storage Systems
Disinfection and Risk Assessment of Domestic Hot Water Storage Systems looks at the area of prevention of legionella bacteria growth and Legionnaires’ disease within domestic hot water storage systems. Under general health and safety law it is a legal requirement of employers and persons in charge of buildings to consider the risks from legionella. The objective of BPEC’s training materials is to train people to properly design and maintain water systems to minimise the risks from legionella.

The Disinfection of Water Systems training manual is aimed at individuals who wish to physically disinfect hot and cold water systems.  The training manual explains the properties of water, with particular focus on how to prevent the development of the harmful legionella pneumophila bacteria, which causes Legionnaires’ disease. The manual explains how a water system should be disinfected and also lists the chemicals that are used in this process. The training course includes a practical demonstration of how to disinfect a water system.

The Risk Assessment of Water Systems
The Risk Assessment of Water Systems is aimed at individuals who are responsible for the management and maintenance of hot and cold water systems in residential accommodation, e.g. managers of nursing homes and housing associations.  The training manual provides an introduction to the properties of water and the design of water systems. It is specifically concerned with the risk elements inherent in water systems that might lead to the development of the Legionella bacteria. Included in the training manual is a log book to be used in the risk assessment of a cold and hot water system to record the details of the system and its performance. A clean log book is included on a CD Rom within the manual.

The training and assessments are currently available at many of the BPEC approved centres throughout the country. To find your nearest centre please use the postcode search by clicking here.

Above Ground Sanitary Pipework & Rainwater Systems
Above Ground Sanitary Pipework & Rainwater Systems is aimed primarily at practising plumbing and heating engineers who already have a knowledge of the fundamental requirements of above ground sanitary pipework and rainwater systems.  The course aims to update their knowledge to meet the requirements of the current Building Regulations.

It is designed to ensure that installers are fully aware of the legislation surrounding the design and installation requirements of both above ground sanitary and rainwater systems and also the purpose and use of the various components within each system including macerators and waste disposal systems.
